Message from the Director

It’s Women’s History Month. We are once again taking stock of our past while also focusing on the important women’s health issues of today. I encourage you to learn more about the historic contributions of women scientists at FDA and to view the timeline of FDA contributions to women’s health in the last 20 years. I also encourage you to view the new women’s health research and educational resources highlighted in this update.

FDA Women's Health Highlights

2015 OWH Research Grants

OWH has selected 16 research projects for FY 2015 funding.  Projects were selected that (1) leverage current or past peer-reviewed women’s health research projects or (2) support of the implementation of the FDASIA Section 907 Action Plan. The outcomes of the research will help FDA develop innovative approaches to identify and evaluate sex differences and assess the safety and efficacy of medical products used primarily by women.

FDA has digital tools and free materials to prepare college women for Spring Break. Help spread the word about these resources and encourage students to stay safe while they are on vacation.

Extras

Drug Safety Communication for Stop Smoking Drug

FDA is warning that the prescription smoking cessation medicine Chantix (varenicline) can change the way people react to alcohol. In addition, rare accounts of seizures in patients treated with Chantix have been reported. FDA has approved changes to the Chantix label to warn about these risks. Until patients know how Chantix affects their ability to tolerate alcohol, they should decrease the amount of alcohol they drink. Patients who have a seizure while taking Chantix should stop the medicine and seek medical attention immediately.
