Message from the Director

As we celebrate National Wear Red Day, I encourage you to look to FDA for educational and scientific resources on women and heart disease. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women. FDA is committed to educating consumers on how to safely use the medicines, devices, and foods essential for women’s heart health. We are also supporting regulatory research to better understand sex-based differences that impact products used to diagnose and treat heart disease. To learn more about these efforts, check out the resources and activities highlighted in this update.

Extras

Updated FDA Requirements for Infant Formula

FDA published an interim final rule which sets standards for manufacturers to produce safe infant formula. The rule, in part, will ensure that infant formula contains all federally required nutrients. The interim final rule also establishes current good manufacturing practices specifically designed for infant formula. Companies currently manufacturing infant formula in the United States already voluntarily conduct many of the current good manufacturing practices and quality control procedures included in the interim final rule. Public comments will be accepted for 45 days at: http://www.regulations.gov/  (Docket Number FDA-1995-N-0036).

FDA's Youth Tobacco Prevention Campaign

FDA launched a new campaign “The Real Cost” to educate at-risk youth about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The campaign targets youth aged 12-17. Use these resources to educate the young women in your networks about the risks associated with smoking.

Nomination Portal for Advisory Committees

FDA launched an online, interactive system that allows interested individuals to submit nominations for membership to any of the agency’s 33 advisory committees. Advisory committees provide the FDA with independent, expert advice on a range of complex scientific, technical, and policy issues.
