Recent clinical studies of the drugs Prilosec and Nexium raised a question about whether long-term use of these drugs increases the risk of heart attacks, heart failure, and heart-related sudden death in patients taking either one of the drugs compared to those who received surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Following a recent comprehensive review of known safety data, FDA concluded that long-term use of the drugs is unlikely to be associated with an increase in risk of heart problems.
