New procedures will build on existing programs and add another layer of protection for the American public. Ephedra has been used in recent years to aid weight loss, enhance sports performance, and increase energy. But it acts like adrenaline and can cause dangerous effects on the heart. The rule is part of an ongoing review of biological products licensed before 1972, when responsibility for licensing these products moved to FDA from the National Institutes of Health. The anthrax vaccine was first licensed in 1970. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2003/NEW01001.html ______________________________________________________________ FDA Investigates Reports of Unlicensed Flu Vaccine Sales, Administration After receiving reports of offers to sell unlicensed flu vaccine, and of individuals who are not licensed healthcare professionals administering questionable flu vaccine, FDA is investigating the matter with other federal and state officials. Only three vaccines are licensed for use in the United States, and these are available only from licensed sources such as doctors, pharmacies and healthcare clinics. FDA urges healthcare providers to buy the vaccine only from reputable distributors with proper evidence that the vaccine is licensed for sale in the United States.
