FDA to Merge Review of Drugs and Biological Pharmaceuticals

FDA has announced plans to transfer responsibility for review of new
biological pharmaceuticals into its Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The plan will free the agency's biologics center to concentrate on areas
such as vaccines and blood safety.

New Chief of FDA Field Operations Named

John M. Taylor has been appointed FDA senior associate commissioner for
regulatory affairs, with responsibilities that include overseeing the
agency's field force. He replaces Dennis Baker, who has held the position
since 1999.

Panel Will Discuss Safety of Acetaminophen, Other OTC Pain Relievers

FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee will meet Sept. 19 and 20 in
Silver Spring, Md., to discuss safety issues related to use of acetaminophen
in over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs, and of aspirin and other
OTC nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The meeting is open to the public
and doesn't require advance registration.
