Title: Advisory Circular 150/5300-13A, Airport Design -- U.S. Federal Aviation Administration Website

We recently added the following AC(s) to the New and Revised Airports Advisory Circulars page (www.faa.gov/airports/resources/recent_advisory_circulars/) on the FAA website:

AC 150/5300-13A, Airport Design
This AC contains standards and recommendations for the geometric layout and engineering design of runways, taxiways, aprons, and other facilities at civil airports. This is the first major rewrite of this AC since 1989 and the result of extensive collaboration between the FAA and industry.

This substantial revision fully incorporates all previous changes to AC 150/5300-13 as well as new standards and technical requirements. Principal changes include:

  • Revised formatting to simplify and clarify the FAA’s airport design standards and improve readability, consolidated appendices, updated figures, and hyperlinks to allow the reader to easily access supplemental information from the internet
  • Interactive table on runway design requirements
  • New Runway Design Code providing the aircraft approach category, airplane design group, and the approach visibility minimums for a particular runway
  • New Taxiway Design Group categories to better categorize aircraft for more efficient taxiway intersection design
  • Clear language for permissible land use in the Runway Protection Zone
  • Updated aircraft characteristics including Taxiway Design Group data
  • Guidance on new design elements to mitigate runway incursions
