Would a "-o bind" mount suffice too? That way one does not need to setup NFS, not to mention the network overhead this solution might have.

Like:
 # mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /home
 # mount -o bind,ro /home /mnt/

I just tested this: /dev/sdb1 did not get altered with the bind-mount.
