hm, i still doubt there are fs problems here.

other programs might be umlaut-aware, some others are not. try to cp to
another name and try to open the file then:

$ mkdir new
$ cp ÃmlÃut.txt new/umlaut.txt
(use wildcards for the umlauts: *uml*ut.txt)
$ diff *uml*ut.txt new/umlaut.txt

you could try and move the files to another filesystem, then try to open
it with the same tools (on the same machine!)
