Strange, in general badblocks does work fine with mounted filesystems in 
read-only test ...

# grep "hdc " /etc/fstab
/dev/hdc        /                  ext3     defaults             1  2
# badblocks -v /dev/hdc
Checking for bad blocks in read-only mode
>From block 0 to 156290904
