wrong display resolution

Hi all

After upgrading my Ubuntu from 10.04 to 14.04 I only see the upper left detail of the whole screen.

In the Xorg log file I found that the mode was probed to 1024x768 instead of 640x480.

Then I found a suspicious error message from the kernel that could be the cause of the failed mode setting.

Is my assumption correct?
