No, that backtrace is perfectly fine. What hardware generation is this?

It looks like the problem is that VLC is using the shader based MPEG2 decoder
for playback which is known to have some bugs.

The most likely reason is that your hardware is simply a bit old and doesn't
have MPEG2 support (everything older than NI).
