I believe that the above patch addresses the ideas you had then, but I could use some feedback (or if it looks good, then maybe it can go in). Although the original discussion was triggered by my render-node patch series, I think that the above patch is useful outside that context.

BTW, I have been running all this time with this patch and didn't notice anything suspicious.
