Depending on which app I run, kern.log is filling with errors telling that "htile buffer too small". I've added some logs to radeon_dri2.c and r600g's r600_state.c to help understanding the problem. I'm using Radeon HD 4850 with dual-screen setup (total res: 3360x1050). It seems that each component (dri2, kernel, mesa) uses a different value for width/height/pitch, maybe that's the source of the problem ?
