Well, I first tried HL2, when Mesa 7.10 came out, and it was the same back
then, and I see no change since. I just didn't want to open too much bugreports
at once, and it is not easy to test, when the computer has to be restarted
after each try.

I'm not surprised HL2 is broken in dx8 mode. I found on windows that it's
broken in dx9 mode as well: it frequently turns HDR off, but that way it's
fullbright on most levels and the sky is wrong, too. I haven't yet had the
courage to install the unofficial workaround for that.

HL2 shouldn't hit any hardware limitation on an r500 series card, BTW.
