Well, looking further back down the call chain, radeon_bo_create takes the vram_mutex across the ttm_bo_init call, so I was duped by the compiler's instruction scheduling. I looked at various changes to the locking scheme which did address the X hang (thus blackouts), but all attempts failed with lockdep violations somewhere, so there is no minimal fix without revisiting recent locking scheme changes [1,2,3]. I'll pass on some other minor fixes I've cooked up in the meantime. Note that I am running with the kernel boot options 'dynpm=1 radeon.dynclks=1' to stop everything getting toasty; let me know if you need more info for this issue.
