However, 5.15 “un-supported” by upstream is confusing me. It’s an official LTS kernel with an EOL of December 2026. Also, I’d like to note that NixOS kernels tend to be very close to upstream. I’m aware that this is output that shows symptoms and not (necessarily) the cause. I’m currently a bit out of ideas where to look for more information and would appreciate any pointers. My suspicion is an interaction problem triggered by the use of NVMe in combination with other systems (xfs, dm-crypt and raid are the ones I’m aware of playign a role). The use of NVMe itself likely isn’t the issue (we’ve been using NVMe on similar hosts and also in combination with dm-crypt with this kernel for a while now) and I could imagine that it triggers a race condition due to the higher performance - although the specific performance parameters aren't *that* high. Right before the lockup I see ~700 IOPS reading and ~2.5k IOPS writing. So we have seen NVMe with dm-crypt but not with raid before. I can perform debugging on that machine as needed, but googling for any combination of hung tasks related to nvme/xfs/crypt/raid only ends up showing me generic performance concerns from forum, an unrelated xfs issue mentioned by redhat and the list archive entry from this post.
