Hello, [1.] One line summary of the problem: PROBLEM: powertop reports 8000 spurious interrupts/s from USB disk [2.] Full description of the problem/report: I am frequently seeing bursts of (exactly) 8000 interrupts per second from my USB controller; it seems to be closely related to activity on my USB hard disk, although the relation is somewhat vague. I have been experiencing this problem for a while now, but I have not bothered to report it until now. It does not seem to cause any visible performance difference, but it probably stops the CPU from going into deeper sleep states and is otherwise wasteful. The effect is painfully visible from powertop as well as dstat. As seen in lspci output later, I have two EHCI USB controllers: one integrated nVidia CK804 chipset controller (usb3), and another Via "VT82xxxxx" PCI controller (usb2); the problem is reproducible with _both_ of these, and powertop accounts interrupt counts to the controller where the disk is attached to. The disk contains one large LVM volume, which stores a typical ext3 file system. Here is the powertop output from one of these events: P-states (frequencies) 1.80 Ghz 0.0% 1000 Mhz 100.0% < Detailed C-state information is only available on Mobile CPUs (laptops) > Wakeups-from-idle per second : 8420.1 interval: 10.0s no ACPI power usage estimate available Top causes for wakeups: 95.4% (7998.7) <interrupt> : ehci_hcd:usb2 2.2% (186.4) <interrupt> : ohci_hcd:usb3, eth0 1.2% (101.9) java : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup) 0.3% ( 23.0) USB device 3-1 : USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse (Logitech) 0.2% ( 19.9) wrapper-linux-x : do_nanosleep (hrtimer_wakeup) 0.1% ( 11.3) firefox-bin : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup) 0.1% ( 9.1) java : schedule_timeout (process_timeout) 0.1% ( 6.3) <interrupt> : sata_nv, NVidia CK804 Typical burst as seen in dstat (view in monospace font): ----total-cpu-usage---- -dsk/total- -net/total- ---paging-- ---system-- usr sys idl wai hiq siq|_read _writ|_recv _send|__in_ _out_|_int_ _csw_ 8 1 90 0 0 1| 0 104k| 76k 19k| 0 0 | 202 730 10 3 87 0 0 0| 0 96k| 92k 17k| 0 0 | 235 907 14 3 75 8 0 0| 48k 0 | 37k 15k| 0 0 |4026 999 <-- running ls -l 12 2 85 0 0 1| 0 0 | 49k 36k| 0 0 |8189 881 9 3 88 0 0 0| 0 0 | 104k 31k| 0 0 |8215 788 10 3 87 0 0 0| 0 48k| 31k 25k| 0 0 |8183 767 9 1 90 0 0 0| 0 0 | 16k 30k| 0 0 |8171 791 8 3 89 0 0 0| 0 304k| 17k 29k| 0 0 |8174 839 5 4 90 0 0 1| 0 0 | 16k 25k| 0 0 |8167 733 7 2 91 0 0 0| 0 0 | 11k 17k| 0 0 |8124 579 7 2 89 2 0 0|8192B 8192B| 16k 12k| 0 0 |4147 768 <-- unmount 11 1 88 0 0 0| 0 0 | 20k 19k| 0 0 | 152 634 8 6 86 0 0 0| 0 568k| 91k 24k| 0 0 | 276 1087 7 4 89 0 0 0| 0 0 | 17k 15k| 0 0 | 205 766 9 3 88 0 0 0| 0 0 | 16k 13k| 0 0 | 169 703 What is obviously visible from the dstat output is that the ~8000 interrupts keep arriving even when there is no actual activity on the disk, and it also causes no noticeable CPU load. [3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel): USB storage, powertop, spurious interrupts, LVM [4.] Kernel information [4.1.] Kernel version (from /proc/version): Linux version 2.6.25-gentoo-r1 (root@non) (gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2)) #2 Sun May 4 15:31:09 EEST 2008 [4.2.] Kernel .config file: http://pastebin.ca/1007100 (set to expire in 3 months) Note that I used to have the "experimental" CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND option disabled in kernel versions 2.6.24 and earlier. [5.] Most recent kernel version which did not have the bug: I am pretty sure this symptom dates back to 2.6.18, but I probably just didn't notice it before that. In any case it is not a recent regression. [7.] This is how I can typically trigger the situation: # activate LVM volume group vgchange -a y portable # sometimes mount already triggers the event: mount /dev/portable/media /mnt/media -t ext3 -o noauto,noatime,nosuid # if mount did not trigger it, listing a long directory typically helps: ls -la /mnt/media/music # this often (but not always) stops the interrupt flood umount /mnt/media # if the prior did not work, this always seems to work: vgchange -a n portable [8.] Environment [8.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here) Linux non 2.6.25-gentoo-r1 #2 Sun May 4 15:31:09 EEST 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux Gnu C 4.1.2 Gnu make 3.81 binutils 2.18 util-linux 2.12r mount 2.12r module-init-tools 3.4 e2fsprogs 1.40.4 reiserfsprogs 3.6.19 reiser4progs 1.0.6 xfsprogs 2.8.11 PPP 2.4.4 Linux C Library 2.7 Dynamic linker (ldd) 2.7 Procps 3.2.7 Net-tools 1.60 Kbd 1.13 oprofile 0.9.3 Sh-utils 6.9 udev 118 Modules Loaded pppoe pppox ppp_generic slhc it87 hwmon_vid eeprom k8temp usbhid i2c_nforce2 [8.2.] Processor information (from /proc/cpuinfo): processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 47 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 1000.000 cache size : 512 KB fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good pni lahf_lm bogomips : 2011.89 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts fid vid ttp tm stc [8.3.] Module information (from /proc/modules): pppoe 11136 2 -
