Error Message - Could someone give me a pointer?

I'm getting the following error on trying to open a luks container. Note the spaces, "on ... failed":

device-mapper: reload ioctl on failed: No such file or directory"

This is on boot of my attempt to create a new install of Gentoo. Any attempt to use `cryptsetup open` from the initramfs also produces that message, after some delay. On the other hand, `cryptsetup isLuks` reports positively. Does anyone have any insight as to what this message might mean?

Thanks,
/D.
