Thank you for the encouragement.
Before doing anything else, I need to get at least a 2Tb drive. (A spare 1Tb drive ran out of room, and would not hold both the image file and the dd_rescue log file.)
Then I can use dd_rescue to image the "damaged" drive. And then work from the image file.
