There is no known problem with kernel and encrypted swap in RHEL5.6. You need at least process state when this happens - setup some console and run alt-sysrq + t and post it somewhere. For userspace - yes, cryptsetup 1.0.3 in RHEL 5.5 is old and buggy, and there will update in 5.7.
