how dm-drypt works

hey all! i was wondering how dm-crypt works after a partition has already been encrypted. In a situation like:
1. Starting from an empty disk you create a partition encrypted with dmcrypt
2. Once you have the partition encrypted, you decrypted in order to be able to use it and read and/or write on it
3. Once you have written on it... what happens next?

Does dm-crypt re-encrypt the whole partition before closing it? Does it encrypt it while you write on the partition? What if you change a file at the beginning of the partition and make it bigger? does that action produce a displacement in all the following bytes?
