Maybe it's the power? I suggest an UPS if there is some indication that the power is not very stable. Or climate (is your machine behind a window in direct sunlight?) or something else. Or just a bad batch of harddisks. Really, you did have some bad luck!

Well it appears the laws of physics are different today and that "100% sure" is
actually wrong. The disk is totally screwed and neither Vista nor Linux will
load on it now.

So unless dm-crypt has some magic ju-ju juice in it that allows it to kill
hardware, I gonna have to say I've just been very unlucky and have simply had
yet another disk failure. :-(
