making an encrypted backup drive bootable

this is a simple question with probably a simple answer, but i looked hard for
instructions and found none.

i am posting via gmane; not a subscriber.

i have an internal hd (currently unencrypted) and an external hd. the system
normally runs on the internal hd, and the external hd is for backup. i want to
rsync mirror everything on the internal drive to a single encrypted partition on
the external drive (*).

here is the catch: i also want to be able to boot to the mirror in case
something goes wrong with the main internal drive.

i assume i'll need an unencrypted boot partition on the external drive to hold
the kernels. but the mirror is encrypted and i don't know how to dm map and
mount it, yet still boot to it.

i noticed a command called pivot_root, which tantalizingly implies that i can
boot to some sort of temporary fs (on an unencrypted partition?), mount the
encrypted one (*), then switch to it, but i tried it and it didn't work. i
don't mind using a grub floppy to boot. i use debian etch.

i'm sure this is possible because there are instructions for encrypted root.
there just aren't any for when you're not installing a new os.

thanks.

(*) or, *ideally*, to a subtree on an fs on an encrypted partition on the
external drive, if such a subtree can be booted to. that would be ideal because
then i can have an arbitrary number of mirrors.
