two luks questions

Hello, I just took advantage of crash/bare-metal reinstall to move from
cryptsetup to cryptsetup-luks, my first experience with luks. I followed
some of the many tutorials out there to re-encrypt a partition as home
directory. Some mention making a key file, as I had done before, but
didn't say what to do with it. Am I right in assuming that with luks I
can use either a password OR a password-protected keyfile kept off the
partition? Is one way more secure than the other?

Also, the whole procedure worked fine (I did not make a key file),
except that I cannot add a second password to the partition. WHen I try
"cryptsetup luksAddKey /dev/sda8" I get an error message that says "No
key available with this passphrase." Is adding multiple passwords only
relevant when using a key file?

John
