Re: [PATCH v6 3/3] media: i2c: isl7998x: Add driver for Intersil ISL7998x

Hi Michael,

Ah, I thought this was a camera sensor, but it is a video receiver. That's not
the same as a camera sensor, and video receivers use a different API:
VIDIOC_S/G_STD, VIDIOC_ENUMSTD and VIDIOC_QUERYSTD (or in this case the SUBDEV
variants of these ioctls). See for more details below:

You must create a driver-specific range in v4l2-controls.h for these.
See e.g. V4L2_CID_USER_CODA_BASE for how to do that.

Which test pattern should be used depends on the selected standard
(VIDIOC_S_STD). So this menu can just be "Disabled" and "Enabled"
and let the driver pick the PAL or NTSC version depending on the
standard.

Hmm, what happens if there is no signal for this input? Does it pick a random
standard? Or is it N/A?

It is probably fine if some of the inputs are N/A, as long as the others are
a match.

> +	}
> +
> +	isl7998x->mode = isl7998x_std_res[std_id[0]].mode;

Nack. That's not how video receivers work. Everyone who writes a driver for a
video receiver for the first time makes the same mistake...

The driver must support VIDIOC_SUBDEV_G/S_STD, ENUMSTD and QUERYSTD ioctls.
To support VIDIOC_SUBDEV_ENUMSTD the driver must implement the g_tvnorms subdev op,
which returns the mask of supported standards.

QUERYSTD will return the detected standard for all inputs. That is effectively
isl7998x_update_std(), except without the actual updating of the mode part, i.e.
it just detects and changes nothing.

If there are incompatible standards detected for different inputs, then you can
either just pick one or return -ENODATA.

VIDIOC_SUBDEV_G_STD returns the currently selected standard (typically probe will
initialize this to NTSC) and VIDIOC_SUBDEV_S_STD sets the standard.

The typical userspace usage is to call QUERYSTD first, then call S_STD with what
QUERYSTD detected.

Setting a new standard will automatically change the width and height and reset
any cropping. If streaming is in progress, then changing to a different standard
(and thus resolution) is not allowed and S_STD must return -EBUSY.

You can't change the format to something different from the standard, unless there
is a scaler, in which case the video is scaled to the requested format. So for
video receivers S_FMT will typically just overwrite the width and height depending
on the current standard.

Also implement the g_input_status subdev op to give feedback to userspace whether
or not there is a signal.

If the hardware supports detecting signal (standard) changes through e.g. an interrupt,
then you can raise the V4L2_EVENT_SOURCE_CHANGE event to tell userspace about this,
but for some reason this is rarely present in video receivers.
