I agree that it is not a common pattern to require cleanup function to be called on a failure. I'll fix the patch for v14. Going forward, I see no reason why we couldn't automate much of this for drivers: the bindings are generic after all. The notifier could be registered through registration of the v4l2_device. It could be simply released immediately if there would be no async sub-devices around.
