Ceph Steering Committee Meeting 2025-02-17

Hello,

- tentacle release timeframe
  - people want EC rework ("fast EC") sooner than next year
  - at least RGW and RBD have features that are already merged and
would benefit from an earlier release
  - distro alignment remains important to users even if they are using
download.ceph.com packages because having reasonably recent client
side packages (ceph-common, librbd, librados) there "by default" is
    convenient
  - proposal: cut tentacle when EC rework is ready and plan to freeze
the next release ("U") in January 2026 for an April release
    - do we need/want a one-time extension of N-2 upgrade commitment to
N-3 (reef -> squid -> tentacle -> U) to compensate for the shorter
      time frame?
    - no objections so far, to be brought up again with more attendance

- smithi testnode replacement
  - AMD-based blade servers
  - should be better in every way and there would be significantly more
    (+80%) of them!
  - David to send the full spec to the sepia list
  - David is looking to execute the order very soon, if there are any
concerns please speak up this week

- bumping clang 14 -> 19 for "make check" and requiring clang 16 at the
  same time
  - https://github.com/ceph/ceph/pull/61740
  - this should be all that is needed to build on noble too, at least
as far as C/C++ bits go

- irvingi01 was marked offline and would be reimaged back to jammy
  - it shouldn't have been released to the pool, it was an accident
  - future work to enable building on a new distro would be done under
a custom non-required check as to not affect production checks

Thanks,

                Ilya
