Can't you do a ktrace/truss/dtrace/Linux-equivalent and see what file
it's trying to read?

It's possible that Ubuntu has hard coded a path to /etc/ldap/sasl2
(mailing list indicates that may be an old location), but you will
have
to review the build options for the slapd package to verify.
