Yes, it must be smtpd, because it defines (part of) the filename libsasl will
be looking for in /usr/lib/sasl2.

How do you start saslauthd?
What do you get, when you start saslauthd in debug mode (saslauthd ... -d)?
What results does 'testsaslauthd' give you?
