Messages in logs are

May 19 12:51:30 host pam_winbind[25434]: Verify user `USER'

May 19 12:51:30 host pam_winbind[25434]: user `USER' not found
May 19 12:51:30 host saslauthd[25434]: DEBUG: auth_pam: pam_acct_mgmt
failed: Permission denied
May 19 12:51:30 host saslauthd[25434]: do_auth         : auth failure:
[user=USER] [service=smtp] [realm=] [mech=pam] [reason=PAM acct error]

Is man/doc winbindd indicates "account required
/lib/security/pam_winbind.so" which is griten in /etc/pam.d/smtp

"PAM acct error" means the auth-Stage is ok. So the Password is verified
and 
ok.

Maybe the account-Stage is not implemented in your pam_winbind? What
says the 
doc/manpage?

Did you look in other Logs in /var/log/... maybe auth.* ?
