Not well. As sometimes before only US keyboard layout is available at boot time. There should be some script in the tools to build an initial ramdisk with same national character support as on the running system. Kubuntu 9.x had exact keys at boot time and in X. Such minor issues occur with every release. By now it seems to be an option to simply choose one's map here: http://ascii-table.com/keyboards.php and set up a passphrase compatible with US map.
Users should consider this before actually encryption their root partition.
