A little modules.conf magic will work when losetup tells the kernel the
cipher by name (someday soon?).

Patch exists. Was posted to this ml. Search the archive for "a better
util-linux.getpass.patch"

loop_gen always uses CBC mode implicitely. You cannot tell it to use
another mode.

Are you by chance using an old version of the kerneli patch? Current is
2.2.17.10 or 2.2.18.3, depending upon whether you use kernels < or =
2.2.18, resp.
