gpg encrypts your large file with a normal symetric cipher.  This
cipher is given a secret key, and this _key_ is encrypted using an
asymetric key.  So as the size of the file you encrypt with gpg
increases, the number of bits in your asymetric key becomes more and
more irrelevant, and the choice of cipher becomes your main concern.
