So fdisk -l /dev/hdc should give you a list of the partitions on hdc, including hdc2. I've used cryptoloop on devices for some time with no problems, both raw (/dev/hdd for my LS-120 ATAPI floppy drive) and partitioned (eg. /dev/pda1 for the first partition on my parallel-port SyQuest drive).
