I sticked with the (unefficient) RH gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-81) which is pointed to by cc and egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release) wich is pointed to by kgcc.
My path is PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin

Hope this helps,
