GFS (or better GFS2..) would be one solution but you cannot "convert" from an ext type file system; you would need to backup and restore to a newly-created GFS2 volume. You could also consider using a network file system exported from one host or an external filer as an alternative to sharing the data between two hosts. It's difficult to tell whether a cluster file system like GFS2 is "the solution" without knowing what application will use it and how the app is structured; this is key to determining how a clustered file system will perform and is an important factor in deciding which is the best option for a given case.
