If the file system is clean, it should be doable, but the problem is that different kinds of corruption cause especially long delays, and that corruption is unpredictable. Another thing to be aware of: Starting with RHEL6.3, the fsck.gfs2 is now able to analyze and repair GFS1 file systems as well as GFS2, and it is orders of magnitude faster. It's also much more accurate in its analysis and more able to repair corruption that gfs_fsck would just give up and throw away.
