I did see the same recommendation from another source, but I was a little
hesitant after reading some posts recommending against it.  I guess I am not
convinced either way.

Have you tried setting the sysctl parameter vm/overcommit_memory to 2 to
turn off the overcommit, as described here: http://lwn.net/Articles/104179/
