Aneesh, In the latest code, the membership layer is handled entirely in userspace. The CMAN component is a plugin of the openais standards based cluster framework. openais uses a protocol called The Totem Single Ring Ordering and Membership protocol for all communication. It would be possible to feed membership messages and regular messages from totem into the kernel using configfs or some other system. I believe some of this work has already been done. Dave would know more since its his area of expertise.
