What kernel and nfs-utils versions are you running?

Glad to hear it's a separate problem. :-( I changed the subject
accordingly.
kernel-smp-2.4.21-37.EL - custom built to probe all LUNs on each SCSI device
nfs-util is at 1.0.6-42EL
