I will try my best to explain my situation. I don't have a separate mds server. I have 5 identical nodes, 3 of them mons, and I use the other 2 as active and standby mds. In this cluster I don't have any problem and MDS default settings seems enough. The only difference between two cluster is, 5x node cluster used directly by users, 3x node cluster used heavily to read and write data via projects not by users. So allocate and de-allocate will be better.
