Why is there mds and mds_server? The mds, mds_server etc refer to internal subsystems within the ceph-mds process (their naming is arcane). The abbreviated names for performance counters are the "nick" item in the output of "ceph daemon <xyz> perf schema" -- for sufficiently recent code you should see a description field there too.
