That was 5 megabytes size. I tried 6 megabytes and 6000000 bytes, same strory. So seems unrelated to size. I think important things here: 1) actual object size is zero 2) Range request

Could you be so kind to report this in tracker.ceph.com as a issue?
The 512k seems to be related to the first HEAD object, a internal thing on how RGW stores , see rgw_rados.cc:
