Currently, we use approach #1 with kerberized NFSv4 and Samba (with AD as KDC) - desperately waiting for CephFS :-)

I have a production Ceph cluster at the University I work at, which runs brilliantly.
However, I'd like your advice on the best way of sharing CIFS / SMB from Ceph. So far I have three ideas:
- Use a server as a head node, with an RBD mapped, then just export with samba
- Use a platform like OpenStack / KVM to host VMs that reside on Ceph RBDs - and use those to export filesystems (similar to 1.)
- Use a the S3 functionality of the RADOS gateway in conjunction with tools like SoftNAS (https://www.softnas.com/wp/)
They all seem a little inefficient though, especially the 2nd option.
Any help would be welcomed, I think it's an interesting problem.
Kind Regards,
Alex.
