Alright last resort here. Still getting the error message as quoted below, doesn't matter if I do it with ceph-deploy on the admin node or ceph-disk on the actual osd node. I've turned off all options for automounting on desktop Ubuntu 13.04, and even reinstalled the node with server Ubuntu 13.04. For some reason something is catching the newly formatted device and not allowing the process to unmount the device. So far I've checked dconf-editor and in System Settings, so I'm close to getting stumped on this. I'm still looking for more reasons but I'm sure many of you on the list are more knowledgeable about the ins-and-outs of Ubuntu. I can get the mon created fine, btw, so it's just everything after creating osds that isn't working yet. Thanks again for any help or pointers to getting ceph osds running.
