It works most of the time but there are some pieces missing. Especially the init.d script from the Debian package seems not to be able to start any service with a cluster name different than "ceph". I already created the issues http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/5483 and http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/5499 but I wanted to inform the "general public" via this mailing list. BTW: This is all with the stable version 0.61.4.
