Any news on legal side to this approach? :-). I am kind of ready with the first cut version of the code, if you say okay, will submit a pull request soon.

This sounds like a good approach to link to pretty much any external backend (modulo the dlopen part).  I need to check with lawyer types before I can promise we'll be able to merge something like this into the main ceph.git, though!
