2.6.36+ for servers (git version from somewhere last week)

2.6.36-final for the clients

I'll backout that commit and see if the problem goes away.

Which version of the kernel client are you using?  It's possible this is related to efa4c120, which loosened the locking surrounding satisfying readdir requests from the dcache.
