give the kclient a try? git://ceph.newdream.net/ceph-client-
standalone.git branch unstable-backport for use with "older" kernels.

why not let ceph manage the whole partition without a fs inbetween ? like

osd journal = /dev/sdX1

(and remove "journal size")
