I see the same on a CentOS 5.5 system here, but I only see it with the 
2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 kernel. The older -164 kernels work fine.

The system was updated to 5.5 from 5.4. LVM, filesystems and grub should 
be ok, as -164 boots ok. Only -194 has the problem.
